As David Vizard - an automotive and aerospace engineer that writes for 8 different publications wrote March 2005 in GM High Tech Performance Magazine: (running various performance products on a dyno with a crate Z06 Corvette engine) "The reason Mobil 1 was used was because of it's proven anti wear properties. By any yardstick it is a top quality oil and my tests have shown that Mobil's ads concerning its anti wear properties fall well short of reality. This point is being made because the intent was to do an oil analysis wear comparison between the BND QuantumBlue oil and the proven performance of Mobil 1. The lab used here was CTC Analytical (Division of Stavley Labs) (performing a spectrum oil analysis) and without going into a whole load of peripheral details the results showed Quantum Blue cut wear of iron parts by some 30 percent and bearing parts by some 15 percent.
Unlike other oils Quantum Blue is custom blended for each and every customer and with a specific given application in mind. When you get the oil from BND (Automotive LLC) it will have your name right on the container. Like many early LS type engines the 2000 Sierra suffered lifter noise. The oil BND (Automotive LLC) brewed had an additive package that specifically focused on reducing lifter noise. At the beginning of the test there was a great deal of skepticism about this but after about 2 months all sign of lifter noise was gone" (he went on to say) " This oil had more than proven its capability as a means of extending engine life--but what was it like for power? We had an engine on the dyno with an oil good for power but the only Quantum Blue on hand was the 15-45 oil specifically blended for a truck expected to haul 9,000 lbs up a long grade on a 110 degree summer day in the Mojave desert. The thinking here was that if Quantum Blue cut wear by means of friction reduction then this might offset any viscous loss due to being a 15-45 blend versus the 0-30 Mobil blend currently in the sump. Well there was one way to find out so Joe Huneycutt dumped the Mobil oil, changed the filter and refilled the sump with Quantum Blue.
Almost immediately after starting one major factor was apparent: the oil pressure at any given temperature was at least 15 psi higher than with the 0-30 weight oil. All previous tests with the 0-30 weight oil were done with the temperature around 200 degrees F. At that temperature the output with the Quantum Blue was marginally down but running it at 220F (where it still maintained at least +15 psi) the power was virtually the same. These results encouraged the planning of tests on a blend of Quantum Blue done specifically for our Z06 engine."

Let's face it, oils are not what they used to be!
With the advent of the EPA Phase III, solid lifter and flat tappet cams are wiping out!!! Even if you have a roller set up, all is not well these days. Some companies are recommending diesel oils to help with the loss of Zinc, which is the anti-scuff agent that was once prevalent in all oils. This doesn't help as these oils also have been reduced in the amount of additives to comply with the new CJ 07 oil specs. All SJ, SL, and SM and later oils have been stripped of their effective additive packages for "clean air".
The EPA claims that zinc hurts emission control components namely the catalytic converter. We find this funny since most all vehicles since 1975 have had catalytic converters and emission control components. The more sophisticated emission components have been around since the early 80's. EXCEPT for a few of those brand new engines......they are virtually the same and have been for many years. What it comes down to is a desire to speed up the destruction of our vehicles so we will go out and replace them with new ones. Once again, they are going ahead and penalizing the rest of us. (We also blend oils for all new models also!)
What they have embarked on is the reduction of SAPZ. This is Sulfated Ash, Phosphorous and Zinc.
Sulfated Ash is the component that mitigates the total base number or TBN. Total Base Number is a measure of the amount of basic additives in a lubricant. High TBN is desirable in a crankcase oil to control corrosive engine wear from the acids of combustion.
Phosphorous is an anti-scuff agent that is critical in protecting high RPM and High load engines from wear especially on cams, lifters, and cam followers as well as other internal components.
Zinc or Zinc dialkyl dithio phosphate (ZnDDP) chemically reacts with iron to prevent welding of moving metal surfaces. What this component does is essentially a chemical polishing of the metal surface. The QuantumBlue technologies in every gallon of specially blended lubricant far exceeds the SAPSZ reduction problem. We blend the oils to be the optimum in protection for each application.....whether that is Gasoline, Diesel, or 2-Stroke!
Don't let your oil let you down!!!
When you go to the local store to pick out your oil, the first lubricant that you would consider is a solvent refined mineral oil. As in all choices, there are positives and negatives in using a regular solvent refined petroleum oil. Since the molecules are various sizes, they absorb temperature in an uneven rate. Some of the big molecules hold and suspend the heat, the medium size molecules tend to cook out, while the very small molecules turn into hard carbon and varnish. Since up to 35% of their makeup is solvent, one quart of oil could have as much as 11.2 oz of solvent....ILSAC-GF4.
The PCV valve is used to evacuate the solvent fumes from the crankcase. So solvent refined oils also absorb acid, carbon, and moisture. This contributes to your oil level going down! As early as 1800 miles, your oil is spent. Their pumpability, wearability, and oxidation stability are also marginal. This is where the sludge comes from on higher temperature newer engines.
However, the positives of the mineral oils are that they are very friendly on the seals, and their ability to suspend the additive packages are very good. At 1,850 degrees F, they sinter, and fall apart. Your flame front is between 3,500 and 4,200 degrees F, and it turns your solvent refined oils to carbon powder very quickly.
On the other hand, if you are thinking that well I will just use a typical synthetic, you also are not immune. The synthetic oil stock is produced by condensing natural gas into a Poly-alpha-olefin (PAO) base stock.
The positives of this stock is it's pumpability, wearability, and oxidation stability which are much better than a solvent refined oil. It can withstand 2,750 degrees F, and absorbs heat evenly because the molecule sizes are all uniform. However, we still have 3,500 to 4,200 degrees F at combustion, and that temperature will turn PAO to carbon powder too and will still contaminate your detergents and dispersants. The synthetics still have between 8% and 15% volatility....which is better than the mineral with 35%, but still much more than you really want!
The synthetic stock is very aggressive on your seals, and it's ability to keep the additive packages in suspention are also relatively poor. If you are thinking of blending the two together, now you have two oils, and two problems, as you will still exhibit positives and negatives of both. Remember too that the ILSAC GF-4 spec is designed for "minimum standards" and "satisfactory performance" in "regular use" applications. Well any change to the system such as a TCM tuner or heads, cams, higher flow injectors, turbo charging, Super charging or any modification leaves the off the shelf oils holding the bag, and if you are using them with a higher performance engine, driveline, or application, you could be holding the bag as well!
QuantumBlue(TM) Lubricant Oils are the ultimate leap beyond any lubricant oils available at any price. This is the oil that we call Mineral Synthesis base stock. Mineral Synthesis(TM) premium oil base stock exceeds ALL the latest API specifications. The oil is then blended with special proprietary molecular shear, viscosity, and anti-wear technology designed for severe military and space applications.
Wear on all surfaces is effectively reduced by up to 90% with simultaneous reduction of friction by up to or greater than 40% compared with regular petroleum, synthetic, or 50/50 petroleum-synthetic blends. In engines, piston ring seal is maximized in the oil from below the piston for virtually no blow-by.
Special friction modifiers in the transmission formula allows friction where it is applicable while greatly reducing wear and friction which generate heat. This Asparity filling property creates a property on surfaces of working mechanical parts. The property is introduced through chemistry to provide far greater anti-wear capabilities than the original surface of sliding, turning and meshing parts.
